Intel Not Overly Optimistic About Windows 10

Windows_10While Windows 7 was very well-received by users around the world, Windows 8 was not so much. It had to do with the brand new user interface introduced by Microsoft that threw many off their game, which is why many are looking forward to Windows 10 which will not only offer up new features but hopefully addresses the problems people had with Windows 8.
Unfortunately it seems that not everyone is too thrilled about the upcoming operating system. Intel is one of them. Speaking at the company’s annual shareholder meeting, Intel’s CEO Brian Krzanich expressed his doubts about Microsoft’s upcoming operating system, claiming that in the long-run, he doubts that Windows 10 will have a positive impact on the industry.
Krzanich was quoted as saying, “As we entered this year, we are going through another transition, Windows 10 upgrades. And we are seeing some quarter-to-quarter pushing, but we continue to take a view of our long-term forecast. A long-term forecast is the PC market should be flat to slightly down mid-single digits over the long-term.”
Of course these are merely predictions of Intel’s CEO and might not necessarily be an indication of how Windows 10 will turn out and how it will impact the industry. So far initial reviews of the technical preview of the platform appear to be pretty positive and with the operating system pegged for a late July launch, we guess we won’t have to wait too long to see if Krzanich’s predictions come true.

Windows 10’s 29th July Release Date Confirmed

windows 10
According to Microsoft, “On July 29, you can get Windows 10 for PCs and tablets by taking advantage of the free upgrade offer, or on a new Windows 10 PC from your favorite retailer. If you purchase a new Windows 8.1 device between now and then, the Windows 10 upgrade will be available to you and many retail stores will upgrade your new device for you.”
Previously Microsoft had stated that they had planned Windows 10 for a 2015 release but did not give any specific dates. AMD’s CEO accidentally let the cat out of the bag when she revealed that it was pegged for an end of July release but since it was not an official announcement by Microsoft, we were still a tad skeptical.
In any case it looks like the release date is for real so if you’re excited for all the brand new features Microsoft will be bringing to the table, such as CortanaMicrosoft’s new Edge internet browser, and features such as Contiuum, you’ll want to keep an eye out for that prompt so that you can reserve your free copy of Windows 10 and upgrade yourself upon its release.

Windows 10 Will Take These Features Away From You

windows10
Microsoft finally confirmed today when it’s going to release Windows 10 and it has now started prompting Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users to reserve their free upgrade. Yes the new software brings lots of new features and overall improvements but there are some features that will no longer be available on Windows PCs once users jump up to the latest iteration.
It has already been confirmed that Windows Media Center will not live to fight another dayon Windows 10. The desktop gadgets in Windows 7 and the card game Hearts are also being taken away by Windows 10.
Users who still rely upon floppy disks will have to install new drivers once they have upgraded to Windows 10. The company has also said that DVD playback is going to require separate software but since most people use VLC anyway, that’s unlikely to bother them.
The company has updated system requirements for the new software, the minimum specs required to support Windows 10 include a 1GHz processor with 1GB RAM, 16GB storage and a 1,024×600 pixel resolution display. Specs are slightly higher for the 64-bit version of Windows 10.
There will be some feature limitations as well. Cortana will only be available to users in the United States, United Kingdom, China, Italy, Germany, France and Spain at launch. Those who are waiting to try out Windows Hello will need a supported fingerprint reader or an infrared camera for facial recognition.
Microsoft has also changed the way how updates are downloaded and installed. Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise users will have the option to defer updates but not Windows 10 Home users. As soon as an update is available for them it will be automatically downloaded and installed.

Windows 10 Clean Install Will Be Possible After Free Upgrade

windows 10
Many of you might be well aware by now that Microsoft is going to allow Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users to upgrade to Windows 10 for free as long as they do it in one year, if they don’t upgrade within the first year, they’ll have to pay for the software. It’s plenty to time to get your machine in order for the upgrade. Many have wondered if a Windows 10 clean install will be possible once the free upgrade has been claimed, Microsoft has cleared that up today.
People have been genuinely concerned about the Windows 10 clean install situation because you never know when the need might arise to do a fresh install of Windows 10 on your machine.
Given that it’s going to be a free license and users won’t have paid for the software, they might believe that it would not be possible to get Windows 10 back for free if it’s removed from the system.
That’s not the case though. Head of the Windows Insiders program at Microsoft Gabe Aul has confirmed that Windows 10 clean install will be possible and users won’t be charged for reinstalling the OS on their machine.
“Once you upgrade W10 w/ the free upgrade offer you will able to clean reinstall Windows 10 on same device any time,” Aul confirmed.
Keep in mind though that the free upgrade to Windows 10 will only be available for one year so be sure to claim it within that time limit.

How To Make a Graph in MS Excel

Excel is a great productivity program and it is being used by millions of people and businesses alike. Data entry is one of the basic functions of all businesses and Microsoft Excel handles it perfectly. You keep track of all the data and also visually make it easy to understand.
When it comes to making the data easy to understand, Excel’s built-in Charts/Graphs make it a zippy. They don’t just present the information in a easy to digest manner, but they are actually quite easy to make as well.
All you need to do is arrange the data on which you would like to create the Graph and the rest is handled by the Excel. In this tutorial, we are going to show you how you create a Chart/Graph in Microsoft Excel and then edit it.
Note: This tutorial is written using Microsoft Excel 2007, however, the instructions for other versions of Microsoft Excel is same as well. There might be some visual changes, but overall, same instructions will apply.

Create a Microsoft Excel Chart

Before starting, you need to enter the data on which you would like to create a chart. If you have the data online, then just Copy/paste it in the Excel, otherwise, manually enter the data. In our example, we have Test scores of five students and we will present this information on a chart.
make_a_graph_in_excel (1)
First, you need to highlight all the information which you would like to present on the chart. Click and hold at the First row and column of the data and drag your cursor to the last column and row of the data. Once all data is highlighted, leave the click.
make_a_graph_in_excel (2)
Now, click on the “Insert” tab above and you will see different types of charts in the “Charts” panel.
make_a_graph_in_excel (3)
You can click on any chart and below you will see all the charts types available. If you want to see more charts, then click on “Other Charts” and below you will see more charts along with what sub-types they offer.
make_a_graph_in_excel (4)
make_a_graph_in_excel (5)
You can select any chart you like (depending on your data, of course) and it will be immediately created according to the data provided. In our case, a simple Clustered Column chart will do wonders, so we will select it.
make_a_graph_in_excel (6)
make_a_graph_in_excel (7)
All charts might be able to present your information, but still you will have to find the right chart that fits your data perfectly (if you don’t know which chart applies to your data). If you think the current applied chart is not presenting the information properly, just click on “Change Chart Type” button located at the top left corner of the window. All charts will be displayed in a separate window and you can select another one from there.
make_a_graph_in_excel (8)
make_a_graph_in_excel (9)
Your chart will be created and it will be in its final form, there are no “compulsory” tweaks required. However, there are still many things you can edit to make your chart look better and present information even more clearly. Keep on reading to learn how to edit your newly created chart and get the out of it.

Customize the Chart

Once the chart is created, you will see all information in X axis and Y axis. If you don’t like to way the information is presented you also have the option to switch information on X axis and Y axis. Click on “Switch Row/Column” button located at the top (these are all new options, displayed when you created the chart) and you will see that the information is switched.
make_a_graph_in_excel (10)
make_a_graph_in_excel (11)
To make the chart more informative, you can change its layout using the “Chart Layouts” panel above. Click on the tiny upside down button on the right of the Chart layouts panel and you will see all the available layouts for your selected chart. Select the one that fits your needs, most probably, it will offer you to add a title and information on both axis.
make_a_graph_in_excel (12)
make_a_graph_in_excel (13)
make_a_graph_in_excel (14)
You can double click on “Chart title” and “Axis Title” to edit them. Just remove the current dummy text and replace it with what you want to define in the specific title.
make_a_graph_in_excel (15)
You can also change the chart style and color from the “Chart Styles” panel above. Click on the tiny downwards arrow on the right of the “Chart Styles” panel and you will see all the available styles. Just select the style that works best for you.
make_a_graph_in_excel (16)
make_a_graph_in_excel (17)
Most of the Charts also come with their 3D counterparts. Just go to “Insert” tab again and click on the chart which you are using. There you will see the 3D counterpart under the heading 3-D column. Just select it and it will be applied with all the previous edits you made.
make_a_graph_in_excel (19)
make_a_graph_in_excel (20)
Now, click on “Layouts” tab and you will see all the options related to the layout of the chart. These options will give you even more control than the customized layouts. Here you can add shapes, change the location of the legends or even add a picture from your hard drive.
make_a_graph_in_excel (21)
With all these Additional changes, you also have full control over the information presented in the graph. You can easily increase or decrease the size of everything inside it and relocate them. All you need to do is click and hold on the sides of the information and drag to increase or decrease the size.
make_a_graph_in_excel (22)
Above Chart might be a bit complex in your scenario, so here is an example of a simple chart as well:
Create-a-Graph-in-Excel
With the above instructions, you should be able to create an amazing graph.

How To Install .NET 3.5 On Windows 8

If you are reading this page, chances are that you have been trying to run an application that is asking to have .NET 3.5 or older, going back to 2.0. The good news is that .NET 3.5 (what is .NET by the way?) can handle all prior .NET versions, so you only need to install it once. The bad news is that the installation will sometimes fail and while the problem is largely documented, the solutions are sparse and many don’t work. I have bumped into this problem myself with a fresh Windows installation, so I wanted to share how I got out of it. I’ll go through many possible fixes for this, from “easy”, to the more difficult one.

Fix 1: enable .NET 3.5 in the control panel

Open the Windows control panel, search for “Turn Windows features on or off” and click on that link. A dialog will open and you can see that .NET Framework 3.5 is unchecked. To add make it active, check it and click OK.
enable-net3.5-control-panel
In theory, Windows should download the necessary files from the web, install the framework, and that’s it. Congratulations, you can now run your app. Unfortunately, many users will encounter a dreaded error code 0x800F0906.

Fix 2: what is code 0x800F0906 and how to go around it

A number of errors associated with this particular error is documented in the official Windows support site. The error means that for some reason, Windows is not able to download the necessary files to install .NET 3.5.
This is a fairly generic error, and of course, the first thing that Microsoft says is “check your Internet connection” which is a fair question, but most likely, your Internet runs just fine, and this is how you got to this site.
The first thing that I tried was to download a 175MB full distribution of NET 3.5, but the installation failed as well, proving that this was not an Internet connectivity issue.
Since the download doesn’t work, the other solution is to install the framework from a local media, USB Disk or DVD ROM depending on what’s at hand. Most OEMs no longer ship discs with their computers, and most also don’t provide a Windows installation USB stick as well.
This is a big issue because you undoubtedly want to have access to a Windows install RIGHT NOW, and you basically have to either
  • Order a bootable OS media from the PC maker
  • Borrow one from a friend
  • Download a windows install ISO image and make a bootable USB installation disk. This is when having geeky friends come in handy.
Note that in order to build a bootable Windows installation disk from an ISO file, you need the Windows USB boot, which requires… you guessed it… .NET 3.5 (the official URL is down right now, but it may be temporary, here’s a backup on CNET downloads).
Alternatively, you may also be able to simply mount the ISO as a virtual drive and copy the files to a local disk or something like that. You don’t need to actually “boot” from it.
I had a Windows XP machine on hand, so I used that one to create my Windows 8 USB Boot. However, if you are not so lucky, there are several other Bootable USB utilities out there that claim to replace Microsoft’s own tool. I have NOT used any of them, so it is up to you to decide if you want to try.
Once you have the Windows installation files in a known place, you can use the DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management) utility to enable NET 3.5 for you. For that, you need to open a prompt command in Administrator mode by searching for “command prompt”, right click on the icon and choose “Run as administrator”. You can then run the following command:
Dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFx3 /All /Source:F:\sources\sxs /LimitAccess
install-net35-dism
Note that in my case, my Windows installation files were on F: but this could be different on your system. Replace F: with the appropriate drive.
This procedure is documented officially at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2734782, but I thought that it lacked context and explanations. If you are lucky, NET 3.5 should now be installed and you can run your app!
Unfortunately, I was not so lucky and I found myself facing a new error message: “Error 0x800f081f. The source files could not be found. Use the “source” option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature. For more information on specifying a source location, see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=243077” (the page links to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh825020.aspx which is how to configure a Windows Repair Source). Ultimately, none of the information contained in these pages did help me get this thing off the ground.
install-net35-dism-error
Note that if you want to open the dism.log file, you may find yourself looking at a bit of text and a pile of garbage that look like Asian characters. This is because the text reader is not using the proper character encoding. I was able to read the log properly by opening the file in Word and hand-picking the UTF-8 encoding. The log didn’t provide any useful into to fix this, but at least I was able to discard it after that.
Another solution consisted in changing a group policy to download from an alternate location than Windows update. I tried, but it ultimately failed, so I’m not adding it here. If you want to try that, head to this Microsoft page that explains how to configure the group policy to solve this.
However, I did find a solution to my specific issue…

Fix 3: check if some Windows updates are conflicting with the installation process

I’ve browsed the web A LOT to fix this (so I’m hoping to save your precious time by compiling this) and I found a little video that claimed to fix this exact problem.

Interestingly, the video did NOT fix my problem (watch it if you are curious, it may work in your case), but in the comments, I found a little gem by French YouTube user Simon Vezina who says:
“If this video doesn’t work for you, try removing KB2966826 and KB2966828 from your installed updates and try to install .NET 3.5 again from Add & Remove Features normally”
This seemed odd, but Windows Updates can sometimes create problems, so I went to check if I had these updates by going to: Control Panel > Add/Remove programs>View Installed Updates. In the search box, I entered the KB2966826 and KB2966828, and sure enough, they were both there.
I click on each and selected “Uninstall”, and after they were gone, I went to try again what was described in Fix #1. This time, it worked! No reboot required

What happened?

I don’t know for sure why these updates were causing the problem, but in my case, they certainly did. What happens is that when you install a fresh Windows 8.x Windows, the OS wants to update you as fast as possible to the latest fixes etc. This is a good thing. However, because you do this BEFORE having installed NET 3.5, and because they conflict with the later installation, many people bump into this problem.
Fortunately, the fix is simple once you know what is is, and now that I know the solution, I can see that this was documented online in sites such as dslreportssuperuser, ortomshardware. The problem is that a search for “How To Install .NET 3.5 On Windows 8” doesn’t really surface the immediate solution.
I hope that this page connected the dots and saved you some time. Enjoy your NET 3.x and 2.x apps and if you can’t get it to work, feel free to drop a message here, or if you know another solution, feel free to add a comment to help someone else. Thank you!

How To Activate the .NET Framework 3.5 on Windows 8 Without Internet Access

Microsoft Windows LogoI had to install SQL Server 2012 on my lab computer today. For those of you who follow my blog posts, you might be a little bit surprised why a Desktop PFE is starting talking around SQL, but don’t worry,  this article is still about the Windows Desktop.
One of the prerequisites for a complete SQL Server 2012 installation is that the operating system has the .NET Framework 3.5installed.  As you might know, Windows 8 has the .NET Framework 4.5 built-in and you can optionally activate .NET Framework 3.5 using the Windows Features panel (see the image below), but the problem is that once you activate the .NET Framework 3.5 the computer will want to access to Microsoft servers on the Internet to get the binaries.
Windows Features - Adding the .NET Framework 3.5
But what do you do if you have no Internet connection? The solution emerges with the Windows 8 ISO and DISM. Have a look below for a quick step-by-step guide on how to install and activate the .NET Framework 3.5 without Internet access:
  1. Create a folder on your system drive called NET35 (example: C:\NET35)
  2. Mount your Windows 8 ISO file or DVD
  3. Copy the folder sources\sxs\ from the Windows 8 ISO into the newly created NET35 folder. I recommend using XCOPY for it, for example:
xcopy G:\sources\sxs\*.* C:\NET35 /s[Ed: Note that this copies the contents of the SXS folder into C:\NET35, but not the folder itself]
  4. Once you copy all the files, you can now utilize DISM to enable the .NET Framework 3.5 feature by entering the following command in an elevated command prompt (Start, Type "CMD", press Ctrl+Shift+Enter or right-click the Command Prompt item and choose Run as Administrator):
DISM.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFX3 /All /Source:c:\net35 /LimitAccess[Ed: Note the above is one line but may wrap in this blog depending on formatting - if in doubt, it should be typed as in the screenshot below.]
If everything runs smoothly you should now have the .NET Framework 3.5 installed without the computer needing access to the Internet.
